You have a great site and now you need an attention-grabbing domain name to attract visitors. But, before you start brainstorming names, I have some valuable points for you to consider. So…read on!

Finalize and Narrow Your Site Concept

If you find that there are a significant number of other sites similar to your own, you’ll want to do some additional research. Consider what others are writing about the topic and what you can do to expand it. By including different information on your site, you’ll draw more visitors.

Think back to your search engine results. Remember, you’ll need to refine and narrow your concept, to get a top spot on that valuable first page of search results. Play with and select appropriate sub-themes (that is, your niche). But, as always, remember that, if you are too narrow, you risk loosing visitors as well.

While you want to offer valuable information, you also want to be wary of diluting your site content. Ensure that your visitors can find the information for which they come to your site. Try selecting complementary topics. If, for example, a person is interested in one topic (let’s say making money at home) they likely will be interested in a compatible topic (such as eBay auctions).

Just as a merchant sells goods or services, affiliates sell information. Consider what information you offer that is specific to your site and that contains value for visitors. How does the information you offer stand apart from competitors?

You want your site content to be specific but not so narrow that it is not profitable. Work from your most specific ideas toward your most broad ones. You want to find a balance by hitting your profit margin without becoming so broad that you loose focus…and profitability.

Include the search engine keywords that you previously refined (see “ Refining Keywords to Generate Increased Traffic”) and be sure to include them on every page of copy and in all relevant headings.

Select a Winning Domain Name

Now that you have settled on the perfect site, developed content that is informative, and located keywords that are profitable, it’s time to select your domain name. Just as you focused on high profitability topics and researched your keyword, you have to consider a domain name that will draw visitors to your site and be equally profitable.

Include those concept keywords in your domain name and don’t be afraid to be creative. A winning domain name demonstrates what you do, how you do it, and what you offer. Include keywords that are indicative of your specialty.

Again, remember to change course as needed. Rearrange the keywords in your domain name to enable browsers to conduct better searches and attract people who are prepared to make purchases.

Tip
Domain names should be short, easy to remember, and meaningful. You want to be descriptive, not gimmicky.

Register Your Domain and Expand Your Options

There are hundreds of domain name registrars. These registrars can tell you whether the domain name you are looking for is available. One such registrar, Networksolutions.com, can also provide details about domains that are currently registered. While you don’t have to trademark a domain, you also don’t want to violate someone else’s. Type in the name that you are looking for. If it’s still available, you can purchase and secure it on the site. If it is not available, click on the link for “WHOIS” to learn more details (e.g., who owes the domain, the web hosting company, name servers, etc.). If you are inclined to do so, Networksolutions.com also allows you to make an offer to purchase an existing domain.

To register a domain names with Networksolutions.com, follow the simple steps outlined under “Register a Domain.” As you go through the registration process, think of other sites/markets into which you may want to expand. As you come up with other domain names, register them. You can connect them to your primary web site or launch a new site at a later date when you are ready to expand, but, in the meantime, you don’t want to lose out on a great domain name. Eventually, you will want to tie all of your related domain names to a master site.

By taking time to carefully select a compatible concept and domain name, you come one step closer to ensuring your success…and profitability!
